Dec 07, 2005 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian sharemarket posted modest gains on 7 December 2005, with the S&P/ASX 200 rising 7.9 points to 4,623.9. The All Ordinaries Index advanced 7.6 points to finish at 4,576.3. Newcrest Mining benefited from a spike in the gold price, closing $A0.45 higher to close at $A21.48, while

Lihir and Oxiana also gained as the gold price peaked at a 24-year high of $US512.33 an ounce. Rio Tinto gained $A0.85 to finish at a new high of $A63.84 and Woodside Petroleum rose $A0.69 to $A37.07 as the crude oil price reached $US60 a barrel.
