Scientists discover manic depression gene.

Jan 12, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian scientists have achieved a breakthrough in research on bipolar disorder

(manic depression). They have discovered a gene called FAT that increases the risk that people will develop what is a serious psychiatric illness. The joint team from the

Garvan Institute of Medical Research and the University of New South Wales published the results of the 20-year study in January 2006.Bipolar disorder affects one in 50 people.
