Feb 23, 2006 (BRW - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Singapore Airlines has applied to the Australian Government for permission to fly the Australia-US direct route. Geoff Dixon, the CEO of Qantas, has embarked on a huge lobbying campaign against the airline's

request. It is said that Dixon has met with all key ministers who will decide upon the request. According to one source, Dixon told the ministers that 2,000 staff could be shed

if Qantas and United Airlines have to share the route with Singapore Airlines. The Government is likely to be keen to foster stability in the aviation sector in the wake

of Ansett's collapse.
