Rear-guard action for the innocent grey nurse.

Australasian Business Intelligence, February, 2006

Feb 02, 2006 (Ecos - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian researchers are studying grey nurse sharks in an attempt to avert their

extinction. The shark population on the east coast of Australia is less than 500, with a decline of an estimated 18 sharks a year. Researchers at Macquarie University have developed a model to understand the impacts of the small size of the population. A set of molecular markers was developed, which revealed that there was little migration between populations in other areas. This means that there may not be an effective breeding population within 10 years.
