Antipsychotic drug lessens sick rats' suicidal tendencies.

Australasian Business Intelligence, February, 2006

Feb 01, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A certain parasite can trigger suicidal behaviour in rats. The parasite infects the rat with toxoplasmosis, which gives the rats a desire to be near cats. When the rats are treated with antipsychotic drugs such as haloperidol, which is used to control schizophrenia, the rats do not seek the company of cats. The research has been undertaken by scientists at Imperial College, London. The team leader, Joanne Webster, believes that these experiments lead to understanding of cognitive disorders. Human trials using anti-Toxoplasma drugs to treat schizophrenia have commenced at John Hopkins University in the US.
