Mar 23, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The first serious efforts to investigate how the world's temperature has changed over the last 1,000 years began in the late 1990s. Researchers led by Michael Mann at the University of Virginia in the US used indirect or "proxy" records of temperatures such as tree rings to come up with figures for before 1860, when direct temperature measurements first began. Their research

produced what has become known as the "hockey stick graph", with the graph indicating that temperatures remained steady until the start of the 20th, before taking a steep rise.
