Google casts the net around for Aussie local-search ally.

Australasian Business Intelligence, April, 2006

Apr 20, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Online search engine Google intends to enter the local search market in Australia, and is in discussions with domestic companies about an alliance. Google Australia manager, Kate Vale, noted the company requires a partner for local databases before it can launch an Australian search service. The new offering would result in Google competing directly with Telstra, News Corporation and Microsoft, with the latter having had a local version of its search service launched by ninemsn. Google's main rival Yahoo! already has an Australian joint venture with Seven Network, but has not indicated any intention to enter the nation's local search market.
