Big tobacco accused of sly display.

May 28, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Victorian Department of Human Services is investigating the use of retail store signage by cigarette makers. The Quit Victoria anti-smoking body argues that "Top Trader" signs, claimed by British American Tobacco Australia to be part of a rewards program for shopowners with high turnover, are designed to draw attention to the tobacco products and circumvent an advertising ban. Rival company Philip Morris does not use such signage, although it also has a rewards scheme. It does however see store displays as one of the few remaining ways to inform consumers about the products available, it says.
