Caffeine shots help premature babies.
Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2006
May 31, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A little caffeine shot is good for babies. Doctors have long given premature babies caffeine to prevent breathing problems caused by apnoea. Now a team from the University of Toronto has found other benefits of the chemical in a study of 2,000 premature babies born at around 27 weeks' gestation. Premature babies are placed on ventilators to help them breathe but the pressure from these can cause inflammation and scarring. The researchers found babies that were given caffeine were around 25 per cent less likely to develop the condition and could be taken off ventilators a week earlier.
