May 28, 2006 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Researchers in Sydney are to begin a study of the effectiveness of a probiotic product in boosting influenza vaccinations. The PCC compound is won from lactobacillus bacteria, and will be tested on 300 volunteers.

University of New South Wales emeritus professor of medicine and immunologist Ron Penny will be the leader of the team. He is also a director of Australian drug manufacturer Probiomics, which has developed PCC. Earlier studies had already demonstrated the positive impact of the probiotic in boosting the immune system. Penny concedes he himself was sceptical about such claims at the beginning.
