May 22, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The High Court of Australia is hearing a case about freedom of information. The Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, has denied the press the freedom to see specific Treasury documents. They refer to bracket creep and government grants. A High Court case in 1997, Lange vs the ABC, which decided that freedom of information must be used to deny total power to the executive branch, is not seen as relevant by Costello. The main reason for the restriction on these documents is that they would cause embarrassment to the Australian Government.
