May 15, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A survey of high school children in Australia shows that many lack numeracy skills. The survey was undertaken by Educational Assessment Australia, which is part of the University of New South Wales The study was commissioned by the Commonwealth Bank Foundation. The survey of over 43,000 high school students shows that one in two students in Years 9 and 10 cannot read a bank statement. One in five cannot calculate how to withdraw set sums from an ATM. The researchers concluded that many high school students could not manage their own finances and could make big financial mistakes.
