Beam us up - accelerating the internet to the speed of light.
Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2006
Byline: Nick Miller
May 08, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Five universities are involved in the Centre for Ultrahigh Bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems. In 2006 the Australian scientists of the centre believe that a photonic chip will soon be created and by processing signals more efficiently than silicon electronics, internet speed may be improved by a factor of 1,000. This would mean that a high-definition film could be downloaded in a fraction of a second, compared with the hours downloading under 2006 speeds. The five universities are the Australian National University, Macquarie University, Swinburne University of Technology, Sydney University and University of Technology Sydney.
