Telstra-ACCC love match sets stage for fibre deal.

Australasian Business Intelligence, May, 2006

Byline: Alan Kohler

May 02, 2006 (The West Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Telstra's new fibre broadband network is not about telephone calls or emails: it is about television. It will alter the way networks operate in Australia by offering television on demand. It was inevitable that the telecommunications provider would build a fibre-to-the-node network, yet Telstra complained long and loudly about the competition regulator. This suggested that the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) had somehow spoilt its plans. In fact, discussions did not begin until March 2006, six months after the project was announced. The ACCC has not been obstructive and a deal is expected soon.
