May 02, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- China has 16 of the world's 20 most polluted cities, a World Bank study has found in 2006. It has the world's highest emission of sulphur dioxide, resulting in acid rain falling on one-third of the land area. The downside of China's economic boom has been millions of chimneys belching out harsh pollutants which are seriously affecting the health of its population. There are big increases in respiratory diseases caused by pollution. Rates of lung cancer are up to eight times higher in industrialised areas. The US remains the world's biggest polluter, but China is rapidly closing in on that dubious distinction.
