Australasian Business Intelligence, June, 2006

Jun 15, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian palaeontologists have found what they believe is the earliest evidence of life on Earth. Abigail Allwood and a number of other scientists of the Australian Centre for Astrobiology at Macquarie University, Sydney, examined old rock formations in Western Australia's Pilbara region. Their aim was to map stromatolites over the Strelley Pool Chert formation in Pilbara Craton. As to the question whether the fossil stromatolites are of biological origin, Allwood concluded that the fossils were indeed made by a biological process.
