Evolution in action, by Darwin's finches.

Australasian Business Intelligence, July, 2006

Byline: Bob Holmes

Jul 27, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Peter and Rosemary Grant, biologists at Princeton University, have been able to observe an evolutionary change from start to finish. They found that Geospiza fortis, a species of Darwin's finch in the Galapagos, evolved a smaller beak during a drought in 2004 to avoid competing with a larger ground finch, Geospiza magnirostris. Not all scientists are satisfied with the explanation of the phenomenon provided by the Grants. Andrew Hendry, of the Redpath Museum in Montreal, Canada, advises caution in interpreting the biological changes observed by the Grants as it was a single event on a single island.
