Aug 27, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- One of the world's most eminent scientists has called for the rescue of the Australian lungfish from extinction. Lord Robert May, of Oxford University, has asked the Queensland Government to halt a proposed dam on the Mary River. Lord May fears that the dam will drive the Australian lungfish to extinction. Thousands of other scientists have echoed the call. Lord May notes that the lungfish is a creature unique in evolutionary terms; it is genetically close to ancient fish that gave rise to other forms of life very early on in the evolutionary process. Lord May warned that scientists must have a chance to study the lungfish.
