IT trainees to plug gap.

Aug 17, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Government is taking steps to reduce the nation's shortage of qualified IT workers. It has initiated a new apprenticeship program and there is speculation that it could potentially remove university degree requirements for junior-level technology jobs within the public service. Some Government agencies have had trouble filling technology positions on major projects. Meanwhile, the Australian Computer Society is thought to be considering issuing its own qualifications to capitalise on the increasing number of people entering Australia on 457 visas.
