SMS could be backbone of two-factor ID.

Aug 14, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian consumers are more concerned about security issues relating to internet banking than Australia's banks. While the companies are happy to rely on simple password-based protection, and see identity theft as simply another risk management matter, their customers are demanding improved measures to eliminate fraud. One solution is two-factor identification, which supplements a password with a device such as a smart card or similar "dongle". However, the National Australia Bank is also trialling SMS technology, with the customers' mobile telephone handsets acting as the hardware component. This has the added advantage of being portable.
