$237,000 uni course as degrees keep up with mortgages.

Aug 15, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Some of Australia's universities are unapologetic over full-fee degrees that now cost more than the average home loan. The threshold of $A220,000 has been surpassed for example by combined arts and medicine degrees at the University of New South Wales, at $A237,000. Australian Prime Minister John Howard had vowed in 1999 the cost of a degree would not surpass $A100,000, but there are now more than 100. The federal FEE-HELP assistance scheme for students only applies up to a maximum of $A100,000, while those receiving funding under the Higher Education Contributions Scheme are also leaving university with debts of several tens of thousands of dollars, after tertiary institutions raised...
