Aug 10, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian airspace activist Dick Smith claims a near-miss of two landing aircraft had been ignored by safety regulators. Smith said on 10 August 2006 the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) agreed to investigate the incident only after he wrote to the federal Transport Minister, Warren Truss. It involved two small passenger planes, a Beech Baron and a Saab SF-340b, trying to simultaneously land in cloud from opposite ends of the same runway. Smith contacted the Minister after the ATSB web site stated there would be no investigation. However ATSB spokesman Alan Stray said the bureau was investigating and that the web site statement to the contrary was incorrect.
