How Fairfax Digital created an integrated news desk.

Australasian Business Intelligence, August, 2006

Aug 07, 2006 (Mediaweek - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Fairfax Digital in Australia recently changed its method of news gathering. Editor-in-chief Mike Van Niekerk says the introduction of an integrated news desk resulted in a rise in the number of stories filed by each reporter. Under the previous arrangements, many reporters supplied only one story a day. John Fairfax Holdings has become a 24-hour news company. Niekerk says the aim of the management is to turn Fairfax into a multimedia newsroom. Andrew Jaspan, the editor of "The Age" newspaper, believes a printing press will soon become superfluous.
