Aug 07, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Scientists have shown that beer bran, a by-product of brewing beer from barley, can be used to remove pollutants from water. Researchers at Kobe Pharmaceutical University in Japan found that the bran absorbs hazardous organic compounds, such as benzene and trichloroethylene (TCE), from industrial wastewater. According to the US National Academy of Sciences, TCE, which is used in adhesives and paint, is carcinogenic. Atsuko Adachi, the lead researcher, said beer bran is as effective in remove pollutants from water as activated carbon and up to 100 times cheaper.
