Sep 27, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Press Council (APC) has made a submission to a Senate inquiry into proposed media ownership laws. The APC said the proposed changes to cross-media ownership laws would increase the capacity of governments to interfere in newspaper publishing, and would also result in a substantial reduction in diversity. The APC comprises representatives of News Limited, John Fairfax, ACP Magazines, West Australian Newspapers, AAP and Country Press Australia. The APC is particularly concerned about the granting of regulatory powers over print media to the government-appointed Australian Communications & Media Authority.
