Reading skills are in the genes, study shows.

Sep 20, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Research on the role of genetics in reading skills has been carried out in Australia, using identical and non-identical twins. The scientists from the University of Melbourne, Queensland Institute of Medical Research and Macquarie University found that certain genes definitely predispose children to being able to learn to read more easily, and that this applied equally to the phonics and whole-of-word recognition methods of teaching. Each however required a different set of genes. Another result of the study was that spelling and reading skills appear to be governed by the same genes. The Australian Government recently began a push to favour the phonics method.
