Flu's killer tactic puts families at risk.

Sep 18, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Scientists believe they have found out why the H5N1 virus passes more easily between blood relatives than between spouses. Menno de Jong of the University of Oxford Research Unit in Ho Chi Minh City, studied tissue samples from 18 people in Vietnam who had H5N1, including 13 people who had died. He found that those who died suffered from a cytokine storm which is an overreaction of the immune system. It seems that people who are genetically predisposed to have certain preceptors in their pharynxes are more susceptible to be infected with the H5N1 virus.
