Sep 18, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The World Bank has been criticised for its policy of supporting large new dams. Max Finlayson of the International Water Management Institute said at the International Riversymposium conference, held in Brisbane in early September 2006, that large dams have a negative impact on fisheries and wetlands and, therefore, they exacerbate poverty. Dams are not the solution to water scarcity as they only divert water from one region to another.
