Sep 18, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Lack of sleep could affect the body much more seriously than previously believed by scientists. Tarja Porkka-Heiskanen of the University of Helsinki, has found that sleep deprivation triggered an immune response in rats. The study suggests that chronic sleep deprivation could lead to stress-related illness. Another study, conducted in 2004, showed that people who slept only 4.2 hours for 10 consecutive days had high levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase which is a strong predictor of heart disease.
