Locally-developed flash bricks lay foundation for green industry.
Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2006
Sep 18, 2006 (Construction Contractor - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Australian researchers have developed technology to turn waste from coal-fired power stations into building materials. Flash Bricks, created from powdery waste fly ash, are 28 per cent lighter and 24 per cent stronger than comparable clay bricks. This enables thinner walls, cheaper construction and more useable space. The technique was developed by scientists at the University of New South Wales's college within the Australian Defence Force Academy. China alone creates an estimated 200 million tonnes of fly ash waste annually. Much of it leads to serious air and water pollution while the rest is buried. The university is seeking commercial partners.
