Tax agents' web portal to be beefed up.

Sep 14, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will introduce enhanced security measures for its internet portal for tax agents. This follows a report from the Australian National Audit Office on the system's vulnerability to crimes such as fraud and identity theft. The ATO has already adopted a policy of supplying a digital certificate to every tax agent who uses the portal, although about 1,000 of these agents still do not use the digital certificates. The digital certificates were introduced in response to an attempt to defraud the ATO of $A10.5m in 2005.
