Sep 12, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The University of Adelaide will join forces with Ohio State University to study the two millimetre-long Platygastroidea wasp. The parasitic insects have a life-cycle similar to that of the creatures in the "Alien" movies. They lay eggs on or inside the body of a host animal. When hatched, larvae feed on and kill the host, then spin a cocoon from which they emerge as fully-grown adults. The Platygastroidea wasps are significant in that they are a "barometer" for ecological change. They are capable of monitoring environmental changes and contribute to ecosystems by pollinating plants and breaking down soils.
