Sep 13, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The head of Australia's largest university says it is looking overseas for research links. Monash University vice-chancellor Richard Larkins says Australia is at risk of becoming an R&D backwater due to chronic underfunding by business and government. He says R&D funding is around 1.65 per cent in Australia, compared with around three per cent in many OECD countries. Larkins says Monash is planning a research academy in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai. It wants to do a similar deal in China. Australia's Education Minister, Julie Bishop, says R&D investment has risen significantly in recent years.
