Where Michael Porter is wrong.

Sep 07, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Harvard University academic, Michael E Porter, is considered a strategy doyen and guru by many. His breakthrough book in 1980, "Competitive Strategy", is expected to underpin his Australian seminar in November 2006. However, some critics are sceptical of his thoughts on behaviour and human thought processes. Moreover, changes in the nature of business between 1980 and 2006 make some of Porter's assertions weaker than previously. For instance, fast-paced firms such as Virgin and Google do not fit well with Porter's competitive strategy ideas. Success in business need not rely on strategy when innovation, at times, is a bottom-up, free and rapid process.
