Mercury rising.
Australasian Business Intelligence, September, 2006
Byline: Jeffrey Kluger
Sep 07, 2006 (Time Australia - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Mercury is being identified in animals including bats, bears, otters and panthers. A new study suggests that if subject to wildfire, wetlands could emit mercury that has been accumulated over centuries. Merritt Turesky, of Michigan State University, says some mercury has been accruing since the Industrial Revolution. David Evers, of the BioDiversity Research Institute, thinks the toxic metal could present more of a problem than previously thought. In humans, mercury can lead to health problems such as brain and kidney damage and vision disorders. Power plants are responsible for most environmental mercury in the US.
