Oct 31, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Scientists from the Bionic Ear Institute, the Centre for Eye Research and Melbourne University are developing a powerful bionic eye. The researchers have created a device comprising a miniature video camera fitted to a pair of glasses. The camera sends compressed images to a bionic implant at the back of the eye, which in turn stimulates the optic nerve to send a signal to the brain. The Victorian Government has contributed $A20 million towards a feasibility study, to be conducted in 2007. Graeme Clark, who invented the bionic ear, claims research into the area of carbon nanotubes has promising implications for the state's bionic projects.
