Australasian Business Intelligence, October, 2006

Oct 25, 2006 (Lawyers Weekly - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The privacy rights of Australians are regulated by the Privacy Act 1988, extended to cover the private sector in 2001. Despite the efforts of the Internet Industry Association to make Australia's privacy regime compliant with the European Union directive, "Directive on the Protection of Individuals with Regard to the Processing of Personal Data and on the Free Movement of Such Data", Australia's privacy laws are judged to be inadequate by the European Commission's Data Protection Working Party.
