Sign of the times - age pensions that sort the needy from the greedy.
Australasian Business Intelligence, October, 2006

Oct 24, 2006 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A researcher into poverty has suggested that Australia may have to introduce a system of variable age pensions. Director of the Social Policy Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, Peter Saunders, says the present system, where all those eligible receive the same pension, no longer makes sense. In a speech on 24 October 2006 he said that as people aged, their needs were less, so they could maintain the same living standard on less money. Someone paying rent, however, may need more. As Australia's population ages, he argued, these issues will need to be addressed.
