Stem-cell rethink.

Australasian Business Intelligence, October, 2006

Oct 19, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Research on stem cells may become much cheaper. The Foundation for Taxpayer & Consumer Rights and the Public Patent Foundation have challenged the patents registered by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. The latter foundation manages the Wisconsin University's intellectual property, including a method of growing human embryonic stem cells which was developed by James Thomson in 1998. Biotechnology firms are being charged substantial licence fees for the permission to use Thomson's method. The US Patent & Trademark Office is now re-examining the patent issued to Thomson.
