Oct 12, 2006 (New Scientist - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The US remains vulnerable to any form of large-scale anthrax attack, according to a September 2006 pronouncement. The declaration, from experts at the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh, comes despite the US Government having spent an estimated $US44 billion on biosecurity in the wake of an anthrax attack in 2001 that killed five people. The basis of the Government's biodefence strategy is known as "Project BioShield", but critics believes it has two major failings. It only seeks to combat a small number of pathogens, while its countermeasure deployment plans are also seen as inadequate.
