Oct 03, 2006 (Herald Sun - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Diversionary treatment has helped thousands of Victorian drug users and the wider community. Victorian Police Commissioner Christine Nixon has labelled the program a success. The scheme allows people found in possession of drugs, and those who have been arrested for drug-related activities, to choose to undertake a diversion program as an alternative to going to court and potentially gaining a criminal record. For users of serious drugs, the program includes treatment as well as education. Almost 15,500 people have entered the program since 2000.
