Last gasp near for tobacco growers.

Oct 04, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Tobacco Co-operative of Victoria (TCV) has been in talks with British American Tobacco (BAT) and Philip Morris in 2006. In September 2006 138 tobacco farmers in Myrtleford lost their main contract with BAT, which previously purchased 75 per cent of their crop, and Philip Morris the remaining 25 per cent. The TCV has called on the Australian Government to provide the beleaguered farmers with a reasonable exit package, since each hectare of tobacco delivers the government $A1 million and the farmer $A18,000, according to the TCV. Meanwhile, the Australian Taxation Office and police are expected to monitor farms in the area so that deals are not secured with the illegal "chop chop" black...
