Step towards conscious bots.
Australasian Business Intelligence, November, 2006
Nov 20, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- US researchers say they have developed a robot that can sense damage to itself and devise a way of recovering. The four-legged robot built by researchers from Cornell University and the University of Vermont has sensors built into its joints, which allow it to observe its own motion and develop a concept of itself, which it uses to teach itself to walk. The researchers then shortened one of the robot's legs to test its ability to adapt to injury. The robot was able to sense that it had been altered and developed a new concept of its structure, and began walking in a different manner to compensate for the injury.
