NBA mulls blood test.

Nov 16, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian Government is reportedly considering allocating funding for the testing of bacterial infections of human blood platelets. Platelets, which are blood components that have a shelf life of five days and are highly susceptible to contamination, are commonly used in the treatment of cancer patients. Currently, neither the Commonwealth nor the states fund bacterial testing for platelets. In its 2005-06 annual report, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service indicated that it had made a submission to the National Blood Authority pertaining to the two key measures that would make the blood supply safer. One of those is bacterial testing.
