Watchdog accused of cringing to Hockey.

Nov 13, 2006 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX) -- It has been claimed Australian Human Services Minister, Joe Hockey, has misled the public over the Access Card Consumer & Privacy Taskforce's independence. Graham Greenleaf, the co-director of the University of New South Wales' Cyberspace Law Centre, notes the taskforce is being regarded as an independent regulator, even though it has no statutory basis and must report to Hockey. The taskforce had a number of strong reservations about the smart card proposal, but its recommendations were diluted, allowing Hockey to claim 22 of the 26 recommendations had been accepted, Greenleaf noted.
