Nov 14, 2006 (The Age - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The 14 November 2006 ruling on Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs) provides a degree of business certainty. The High Court of Australia has rejected the argument of unions and states that the Australian Government's WorkChoices legislation was invalid. Opinion is divided on whether the decision will prompt more employers to use AWAs, but given the perceived "safety" of collective agreements, big employers are expected to be cautious of individual contracts. Collective agreements are used at Foster's, the National Australia Bank (NAB), Telstra and Woodside Petroleum. Meanwhile, the NAB's October 2006 survey revealed business confidence to be flat even though conditions improved.
