Bushfire risk will double if emissions continue to rise.

Australasian Business Intelligence, November, 2006

Byline: Wendy Frew

Nov 06, 2006 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Macquarie University research shows there is a 25 increase in the risk of extreme bushfires in New South Wales by 2050. This exists irrespective of efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. The research found the risk could increase to between 50 and 100 if emissions rise to the high end of global projections. Macquarie climate modeller, Andy Pitman, says governments need to be establishing buffer zones between bushland and residential development. The research was based on supercomputer simulations of Australia's climate in the future under scenarios of low and high greenhouse gas pollution.
