US smokers to access new treatment.

Australasian Business Intelligence, November, 2006

Nov 03, 2006 (New Zealand Pharmacy - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has approved its first smoking cessation product in nearly 10 years. Pfizer's varenicline (sold as "Chantix") received priority review designation from the FDA due to its therapeutic potential. Pfizer has lodged a dossier on the new drug with Medsafe in New Zealand. "Chantix" is thought to prevent nicotine from binding to receptors in the brain and to reduce the satisfaction produced by smoking. The vice chairman of Pfizer, Karen Katen, reports that fewer than seven per cent of smokers who attempt to quit without help achieve over 12 months of abstinence.
