Dec 20, 2006 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The Australian sharemarket reached another new high on 20 December 2006. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 gained 48.1 points to finish at 5,607.8, while the All Ordinaries Index was 45.3 points higher at 5,586.9. Rio Tinto added $A0.81 to close at $A76.39 and BHP Billiton rose $A0.45 to $A25.77. Banking and insurance stocks also did well, with the Commonwealth Bank advancing $A0.93 to end the session at $A48.85 and Suncorp-Metway adding $A0.45 to finish at $A20.25 after its takeover of Promina received regulatory approval.
