Opening Japan's banks.

Australasian Business Intelligence, December, 2006

Byline: Colum Murphy

Dec 14, 2006 (Far Eastern Economic Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- Japan's banking system has recovered from a decade of mismanagement. The recovery of Shinsei Bank is a good example of what has been achieved by Japanese bankers in recent years. Shinsei made $US647.8 million in net income in fiscal 2005, with a return of assets of 0.8 per cent. The bank is adding 20,000 new customers each month. Thierry Porte, CEO of the bank, intends to make Shinsei a niche investment bank. Porte believes that Japanese companies' biggest challenge is how to identify underperforming units and sell them quickly.
